Zelensky Calls for Direct Talks with Putin Amid Escalating Strikes

In a rare move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued an open letter proposing a face-to-face meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, offering a temporary ceasefire during negotiations. The appeal comes just after Putin admitted Russia must strengthen its air defences following intensified Ukrainian drone attacks on strategic targets, including Saint Petersburg.

Zelensky’s letter emphasized that only direct engagement could end the war, stating: “Ukraine proposes ending this war through direct engagement between us—and you.” However, he ruled out traveling to Moscow despite Kremlin suggestions that he could meet Putin there “any time.”

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump welcomed the idea of a Putin-Zelensky meeting, calling it “great” and urging both sides to compromise. Months of US-led negotiations have failed to secure peace, with Russia demanding Ukraine withdraw from the Donbas region as a precondition for talks.

The timing of Zelensky’s proposal is significant: Ukraine has recently regained territory while Russia’s advances have slowed. Putin, while praising his forces’ progress, acknowledged the need to bolster air defence systems after repeated Ukrainian strikes on energy and military infrastructure.

For now, the possibility of direct talks remains uncertain, but Zelensky’s bold appeal signals a renewed push for diplomacy amid a grinding conflict.
