Men’s singles saw top seed Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany live up to his ranking. He faced a spirited challenge from South Korea’s Kim Minwoo but ultimately emerged victorious with a convincing 3-0 win (12-10, 11-3, 11-6). Indian legend Sharath Achanta also didn’t disappoint, defeating Ghana’s Godwin Alabi 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-7) to advance to the second round.

In the women’s singles, reigning champion Shin Yubin showcased her mastery, sweeping aside Indian player Archana Kamath 3-0 (15-13, 11-7, 11-4). Following suit, other Indian female players like Manika Batra secured their spots in the next round with dominant performances.

A thrilling upset unfolded in the women’s singles as the younger Nigerian player Fatimo Bello defeated higher-ranked compatriot Offiong Edem in a nail-biting five-setter (11-6, 11-13, 9-11, 11-9, 11-5). “It’s amazing to be playing in Lagos,” said an ecstatic Bello. “This win is a great start for me. I’m determined to keep pushing myself and play my best. Beating Edem, a senior player I respect, gives me confidence for the next round.”
