World Athletics Blocks Ofili’s Switch to Türkiye, Ogba Applauds “Fair Play” Decision
Global athletics governance took center stage as World Athletics rejected sprinter Favour Ofili’s request to switch allegiance from Nigeria to Türkiye—sparking strong reactions across the sports community.
Former AFN president Solomon Ogba praised the ruling, calling it a victory for fairness and a safeguard for developing nations that invest heavily in nurturing talent. He specifically commended World Athletics president Sebastian Coe for upholding the integrity of international competition.
According to the review panel, approving Ofili’s move could undermine national representation and encourage wealthier nations to “recruit” athletes globally—particularly ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Despite securing Turkish citizenship and a club deal, Ofili remains ineligible to represent Türkiye at major events like the Olympics or World Championships.
