US-Based Teen Fencing Star Pledges Allegiance to Nigeria
Rising teenage fencing sensation Peluola Akinbamiro has officially committed to representing Nigeria on the international stage. The 13-year-old athlete, who trains at the Fort Bend Fencing Academy in Houston, expressed that her deep connection to Nigeria fueled her decision to compete under the nation’s banner.
Eager to make her international debut, Akinbamiro reached out to the Nigerian Fencing Federation (NFF), which welcomed her decision. Adeyinka Samuel, President of the NFF, emphasized the growing interest among Nigerian fencers abroad, stating:
“Nigeria has the potential to compete with the best in the world. Having talented fencers like Akinbamiro will inspire homegrown athletes to excel. We believe her addition to the team will boost our chances, especially as we prepare for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and upcoming international championships.”
Akinbamiro, thrilled about this milestone, shared how fencing has shaped her:
“Watching the World Cup ignited my passion for fencing. It has taught me patience and self-awareness. Representing Nigeria is an honor—this is my motherland, and I am proud to wear its colors.”

She also credited her parents’ unwavering support as a driving force behind her success:
“My goal is to reach the highest levels in fencing while pursuing higher education. The thrill of the sport and the uniqueness of fighting with a sword keep me motivated every day.”
With Nigeria set to host the African Championships this year and the Commonwealth Championships next year, Akinbamiro’s addition to the team marks a promising step toward global recognition in fencing.
