UK sanctions Russian officials at prison Navalny died

The U.K. government has announced another round of sanctions specifically targeted at prison officials at the penal colony where Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died.

These sanctions are targeted at six Russian officials that were working at the IK-3 penal colony in the Arctic, nicknamed Polar Wolf and will be subjected to asset freezes and travel bans.

This was confirmed by the Foreign Office in an emailed statement stating that “It’s clear that the Russian authorities saw Navalny as a threat and they tried repeatedly to silence him,”.

While it’s unclear exactly how Navalny died, U.K. officials have concluded the guards at the prison subjected Navalny to conditions tantamount to torture by repeatedly holding him in solitary confinement.
