U20 AFCON 2025: Nigeria’s Flying Eagles Face Tough Group With Tunisia, Morocco, and Kenya
U20 AFCON 2025: Flying Eagles Drawn Against Tunisia, Morocco, and Kenya in Group of Grit
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are set for a challenging group-stage campaign at the 24th edition of the Africa U20 Cup of Nations (AFCON), following a redraw that places them in Group B alongside Tunisia, Morocco, and Kenya. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Egypt from April 27 to May 18, 2025.
Originally drawn with Egypt and South Africa, Nigeria’s group was reshuffled after Cote d’Ivoire withdrew as hosts, prompting a redraw at the Egyptian Football Association headquarters in Cairo. Egypt stepped in as the new hosts and were moved to Group A alongside Zambia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Tanzania, forming a five-team group.
A New North African Challenge
While Nigeria avoided the hosts, their path doesn’t get any easier. Group B now presents two formidable North African opponents in Tunisia and Morocco, both known for their tactical discipline and technical prowess. Also in the mix is Kenya, a rapidly improving East African side that could spring surprises.
This new draw mirrors the previous one in structure, still pitting the Flying Eagles against two North African nations. Nigeria will need to be sharp from the outset to secure a top-two finish and a place in the quarterfinals.
Eyes on the World Stage
The stakes are high—not just continental bragging rights, but also a spot in the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, set for September 27 to October 19. All four semi-finalists from the Egypt-hosted AFCON will automatically qualify for the global showpiece.
