Trump Removes Homeland Security Chief Kristi Noem, Nominates Senator Markwayne Mullin as Replacement
U.S. President Donald Trump has removed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and announced plans to nominate Markwayne Mullin as her replacement.
The decision was revealed on social media shortly after Noem faced tough questioning from lawmakers in Congress over immigration enforcement and the operations of the United States Department of Homeland Security.
Trump said Noem will instead take on a new diplomatic assignment as Special Envoy for the “Shield of the Americas,” an initiative aimed at strengthening regional security cooperation and combating drug cartels across the Western Hemisphere.

During her time leading the department, Noem oversaw strict immigration enforcement policies that generated significant political debate and legal challenges.
If confirmed by the Senate, Mullin would assume leadership of the department, though federal vacancy rules may allow him to serve in an acting capacity during the confirmation process.
The leadership shift comes amid continued discussions in Washington over border policy, funding for homeland security programs, and oversight of agencies such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
