Trump Orders Nigerians, Foreigners Seeking Green Cards to Apply From Home Countries
United States President Donald Trump has introduced a major immigration policy shift requiring Nigerians and other foreign nationals seeking permanent residency to return to their home countries before completing their Green Card applications.
According to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the new directive is designed to restore the “original intent” of US immigration laws and reduce abuse of the system. The policy will mainly affect international students, temporary workers, and tourists currently living in the US on non-immigrant visas.
USCIS said applicants would now need to process residency requests through US embassies or consular offices abroad, except in what authorities describe as “extraordinary circumstances.”

The Trump administration believes the move will strengthen immigration compliance, discourage illegal overstays, and allow USCIS to focus more on priority cases such as human trafficking survivors, violent crime victims, and citizenship applications.
The policy is expected to impact thousands of Nigerians and other immigrants already living legally in the United States.
