Tinubu Renames UNIMAID as Muhammadu Buhari University to Honor Late Ex-President
In a momentous tribute to Nigeria’s late former leader, President Bola Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, honoring the legacy of the former President who passed away on July 13, 2025.
The announcement was made during a special expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The session, attended by ministers, dignitaries, and Buhari’s son Yusuf, was convened in memory of the statesman whose influence shaped Nigeria’s political and moral landscape for decades.
“In honour of his memory… can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri with a new name — Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” President Tinubu declared, drawing heartfelt applause from those present.
A Life of Service and Integrity
President Tinubu led the tributes, describing Buhari as a man of principle, humility, and quiet strength.
“Pious without show, just without cruelty… humane without sentimentality,” Tinubu remarked, emphasizing Buhari’s moral compass and the dignity with which he served both in private and public life.
“His life was a rebuke to vice and a refuge for virtue… The purity of his private character gave radiance to the discipline and integrity of his public service,” he added.

A Legacy Etched in Time
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and returned as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, was Nigeria’s second-longest-serving leader. His death in London after a prolonged illness marked the end of an era, prompting tributes from within and outside Nigeria. He was buried on July 15 in Daura, Katsina State.
Dignitaries at the funeral included President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and Governor Umar Dikko of Katsina, all paying their final respects to a man they hailed as a national icon.
