Tinubu Approves Expansion of Nigerian Army From 8 to 12 Divisions
President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions as part of efforts to strengthen national security and improve the military’s response to emerging threats.
The new divisions will be headquartered in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo and Benin City, with the restructuring expected to improve command and control, border security, counter-insurgency operations and protection of critical infrastructure.
Implementation will take place in two phases. The first phase, covering three new divisions and the reorganisation of existing formations, is scheduled for completion by September 2026, while the final phase is expected by December 2026.
