Supreme Court Blocks Trump Tariffs: Newsom Demands Refunds as Macron Applauds U.S. ‘Checks and Balances’
The U.S. trade war debate has taken a dramatic turn after the Supreme Court of the United States struck down former President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs in a 6–3 ruling, declaring he overstepped his emergency powers.

Governor Gavin Newsom
In response, Gavin Newsom called for immediate refund checks — with interest — arguing that the now-illegal tariffs collected over $130 billion from importers, costs largely passed on to American consumers through higher prices. California had led the legal challenge, saying the tariffs were unconstitutional and economically reckless.
Within hours of the ruling, Trump signed a new executive order imposing a 10% tariff on most imports for 150 days, citing Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. The move has sparked fresh debate, with legal analysts suggesting the new tariffs could face further court scrutiny.
Across the Atlantic, French President Emmanuel Macron praised the Supreme Court’s decision, saying it underscores the importance of democratic checks and balances. He emphasized the value of institutional oversight in preventing unilateral economic actions.
