Superpower Summit: Trump Lands in Beijing to Talk Trade, Taiwan, and the Iran War

Boom RadioNG | May 13, 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday, marking the first visit by an American leader to China in nearly a decade. The high-stakes, three-day state visit comes at a defining historical moment as the U.S. and Israel continue their military campaign against Iran, a conflict that has cost an estimated $29 billion to date.

The Agenda: War, Tech, and Trade

Trump is accompanied by a delegation of elite American business leaders, including Apple’s Tim Cook and Tesla’s Elon Musk. While the itinerary includes a state banquet and tea reception, the core of the summit focuses on three volatile fronts:

  • The Iran Conflict: Trump intends to discuss China’s role as the top customer for U.S.-sanctioned Iranian oil. While asserting that the U.S. will win the war “peacefully or otherwise” without help, he noted that President Xi Jinping has been “relatively good” regarding the situation.

  • The Taiwan Departure: In a shift from historic U.S. policy, Trump plans to consult with Xi regarding American arms sales to Taiwan, claiming his personal relationship with the Chinese leader will prevent an invasion.

  • Economic Friction: Talks will address China’s rare earth export controls and a raucous trade relationship currently held together by a fragile one-year tariff truce.

Global Tension & Regional Fallout

The summit takes place against a backdrop of heightening regional instability:

  • New Sanctions: On the eve of the trip, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned 12 entities, including several in Hong Kong, for facilitating Iranian oil shipments to China—a move Beijing condemned as “illegal unilateral sanctions”.

  • Middle East Escalation: As the death toll from Israeli attacks in Lebanon climbs to 2,883, the UK has pledged weaponry to a multinational mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz.

  • Gulf Allegations: Tensions remain high following Kuwaiti claims that members of Iran’s IRGC attempted to infiltrate Bubiyan Island for “hostile” acts.

With China’s economy struggling under a debt crisis and the U.S. deeply entrenched in a costly war, both leaders face immense pressure to deliver “lasting peace” through this summit.
