State Police: PDP’s Sowunmi Backs Tinubu’s Move, As PRP Warns of Potential Abuse

The debate over Nigeria’s proposed State Police has intensified following the Senate’s approval of the constitutional amendment bill. PDP chieftain Segun Sowunmi praised President Bola Tinubu for pushing the reform, dismissing fears of abuse as “annoying” and insisting governors can no longer blame insecurity on lack of control over policing.

However, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) strongly opposed the move, arguing that the Tinubu administration lacks the credibility and public trust to oversee such a major security reform. While acknowledging the need for policing reforms, the PRP warned that State Police could be vulnerable to political manipulation and urged Nigerians to approach the proposal with caution.
