Simon Ekpa Arrested in Finland on Terrorism Charges

Boom RadioNG | November 21, 2024

Simon Ekpa, a Biafra separatist leader, has been arrested in Finland on suspicion of terrorism-related activities.

Ekpa, known for his advocacy of Biafran independence, is accused of inciting violence and terrorism in Nigeria’s southeastern region. Finnish authorities believe he used social media to coordinate and promote these activities.

This is not the first time Ekpa has faced legal troubles in Finland. In 2023, he was arrested on suspicion of fundraising fraud.

Key Developments:

  • Simon Ekpa has been remanded in custody by the Päijät-Häme District Court on charges of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent
  • Four additional suspects were arrested for allegedly financing terrorist activities
  • The investigation centers on activities coordinated from Finland through social media channels
  • Two of the additional suspects reside in Helsinki, while one has no registered address in Finland

Background and Allegations: Ekpa, who serves on Lahti’s public transport committee and has represented Finland’s National Coalition Party (NCP), is accused of using his leadership position to promote violence against civilians and authorities in southeastern Nigeria. Detective Chief Inspector Otto Hiltunen confirmed that Ekpa allegedly conducted these activities primarily through his social media platforms.

Previous Controversies: This isn’t Ekpa’s first encounter with law enforcement. In 2023, he was briefly detained for suspected fundraising fraud. He gained notoriety for his separatist rhetoric, particularly his vocal opposition to Nigerian elections, famously declaring, “No elections will be held! Nigerian elections will not be allowed in Biafran territory.”
