Royal Antwerp’s Alhassan replaces Leicester’s Ndidi in Super eagles lineup for AFCON

Royal Antwerp midfielder, Alhassan Yusuf has been announced as the replacement for the injured Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi as the Super Eagles prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations happening in Cote d’Ivoire.

Ndidi missed his team’s 4-1 win over Huddersfield Town on Monday due to an unspecified injury.

This development was disclosed by Super eagles’ team spokesman, Babafemi Raji to journalists today where he said Ndidi has been replaced by 23-year-old Yusuf, who has been in good form with the Belgian champions.

Yusuf, despite never been capped by Nigeria was named in the 40-man provisional squad for the upcoming tournament.

However, Ndidi’s Leicester City teammate Kelechi Iheanacho said he hopes to shake off a muscle injury to be available for the competition, which is being hosted by Ivory Coast and kicks off on January 13 in Abidjan.

 

The three-time African champions are training in the United Arab Emirates ahead of the tournament where it was reported about 17 of the players have arrived at the camp.

The AFCON 2023 will commence on 13 January and end on 11 February, 2024.

The Eagles been drawn in Group A alongside Ivory Coast, Guinea Bissau and Equatorial Guinea and will begin their AFCON race with Equatorial Guinea on January 14.
