“Reno Omokri: Tinubu’s Tough Reforms Are Putting Nigeria on a Healthier Economic Path”
Reno Omokri, former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has praised President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, stating they are setting Nigeria on a more sustainable and realistic trajectory than the one pursued under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Omokri argued that while current economic conditions are tough for many Nigerians, Tinubu’s decisions are necessary to dismantle the financial illusion that prevailed during the Buhari era.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
“We were living in a fool’s paradise. Tinubu has taken that away and we’re now living within our means,” Omokri said.
From Borrow-and-Spend to Production-Led Growth
According to Omokri, Nigeria’s previous administration accumulated unsustainable debts to create an illusion of prosperity.
“Should we keep going into debt just to offer people artificial luxury? We borrowed ₦28 trillion under Buhari without informing the National Assembly,” he revealed, referencing loans taken by former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, who is now facing corruption charges.
Omokri emphasized that instead of financing short-term comforts, Tinubu has shifted focus to long-term productivity.
“We can’t keep borrowing to put food on the table. Now we’re producing. Exports are going up, imports are coming down,” he stated.
Debt Reduction Under Tinubu
In what he described as a major but underreported win, Omokri highlighted a $14 billion drop in Nigeria’s national debt under the current administration.
“When Buhari left in 2023, Nigeria’s debt stood at $113 billion. Today, under Tinubu, it’s at $97 billion. That’s progress, and we should be appreciating this man,” he asserted.
This claim contrasts sharply with public perception, as inflation and a weaker naira continue to impact the average Nigerian’s daily living.
Tinubu Following the Playbook of Opponents?
Interestingly, Omokri noted that President Tinubu’s economic policies closely mirror the campaign proposals of his former political opponents.
“Everything Tinubu is doing—cutting subsidies, devaluing the naira, focusing on production—are the exact same things Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi said they would do,” Omokri stated.

Looking Inward: A New Economic Reality
While acknowledging the economic pain many Nigerians face, Omokri insists the hardship is part of a necessary adjustment toward fiscal responsibility.
“The impression people have is that things are worse, but the truth is—we’ve stopped living on borrowed time,” he said.
He called on citizens to be patient and supportive of policies that aim to rebuild the economy from within, rather than relying on unsustainable debt and external handouts.
