Reekado Banks Opens Up: Why Leaving Mavin Records Was a Premature Move
Afrobeats star Reekado Banks has admitted that his 2018 exit from Mavin Records—the powerhouse label led by Don Jazzy—was a decision he made too soon.
The award-winning singer, who rose to fame after bagging the Rookie of the Year award at The Headies 2014 and the coveted Next Rated award in 2015, revealed in a recent interview on The Echo Room podcast that although his departure wasn’t fueled by conflict, it was a step he later realized came prematurely.
Why He Left Mavin Records
According to Banks, his contract with Mavin Records originally ran for three years. He extended it informally, staying on for another two years without signing a renewal. By 2018, convinced he was ready for the next chapter, he launched his own imprint, Banks Music.
“It wasn’t a conflict situation,” Reekado explained. “I was young, fixated on my goals, and convinced it was time to leave. But once I took the leap, I quickly realized how premature it was.”

Life After Mavin
Running his own label brought new responsibilities that made him appreciate the structure and support of a big label. He admitted that independence tested his patience, vision, and resilience.
Despite the challenges, Banks emphasized that leaving Mavin made him more accountable and taught him valuable lessons about the business side of music.
