President Tinubu Reshuffles Military Leadership: General Olufemi Oluyede Appointed New Chief of Defence Staff
In a major shake-up aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s national security framework, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a sweeping change in the hierarchy of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The President appointed General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), succeeding General Christopher Musa, who had served in the role since June 2023. The announcement was made on Friday in an official statement signed by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication.
According to the statement, the reshuffle underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s defence operations and adapting to emerging security challenges across Nigeria.

“He charges the newly appointed Service Chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them by enhancing professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship within the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”

While the outgoing Service Chiefs—General Christopher Musa, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, and Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar—were credited with significant counter-terrorism efforts against Boko Haram, ISWAP, and armed bandits, there have been growing calls for fresh leadership and renewed strategy in tackling Nigeria’s evolving security landscape.
General Oluyede’s appointment is seen as a strategic choice, given his operational experience and recent leadership as Chief of Army Staff, a role he assumed following the untimely death of General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.
