The Nigerian presidency has sharply criticized former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai following his controversial admission on national television that someone tapped the National Security Adviser’s (NSA) phone for him to listen to private conversations.

Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, condemned the remark in a post on 𝕏, stressing that El-Rufai openly acknowledged the illegality during his interview with ARISE Television. Ajayi warned that if El-Rufai is compelled to produce the individual responsible, he might accuse the President of tyranny and persecution.

Meanwhile, El-Rufai has alleged that security operatives attempted to arrest him at an airport, describing the incident as “unfortunate and unlawful.” He claimed the move was politically motivated and vowed that the episode has strengthened his resolve to unseat President Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar visited El-Rufai after the incident, assuring supporters that the ADC chieftain remains in high spirits and committed to building a better Nigeria.

El-Rufai confirmed that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has officially summoned him for questioning, with his lawyer notifying the agency that he will honor the invitation on February 18, 2026.
