Premier League Referees Admit VAR Error Over Haaland’s Controversial Man City Winner

The refereeing body Pro Ref has admitted an “error of judgement” over Erling Haaland’s winning goal in Manchester City’s dramatic derby victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The goal, which ultimately decided the match, was initially ruled out for offside before a VAR review overturned the decision. However, Pro Ref has now acknowledged that the video assistant referee should have recommended an on-field review because of the potential involvement of Manchester United midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Why Haaland’s Goal Became Controversial

Haaland appeared to have put Manchester City ahead in the 60th minute when he converted Josko Gvardiol’s cross at the back post.

The goal was initially disallowed because Haaland appeared to be beyond the United defensive line.

VAR subsequently determined that Haaland was actually onside because Patrick Dorgu’s boot played him on.

That, however, was not the end of the issue.

The VAR ultimately decided that Fernandez had not played the ball and that Haaland’s goal should stand.

Pro Ref has now said that assessment did not sufficiently consider the likely impact of Fernandez’s position.

Pro Ref Acknowledges VAR Mistake

In a statement, Pro Ref said Fernandez’s failure to touch the ball made the question of whether he committed an offside offence subjective.

However, the organisation said the VAR should have recognised the potential effect of Fernandez’s movement and recommended that referee Michael Oliver review the incident on the pitch.

Pro Ref has also contacted Manchester United to acknowledge what it described as an error of judgement.

United Furious Over Decision

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez described the decision as an “injustice” after the defeat.
