Peter Obi Critiques President Tinubu’s Address Amidst Ongoing #EndBadGovernance Protests

A day after President Bola Tinubu addressed the nation following the #EndBadGovernance protests, Peter Obi has voiced strong criticism, arguing that the nationwide broadcast failed to resonate with the lived experiences of Nigerians.

In response to the widespread protests, President Tinubu made a public appeal for calm, urging protesters to vacate the streets while assuring them that his administration was working diligently to address Nigeria’s pressing issues. However, Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election, contended that the President’s message was out of touch with the immediate concerns driving the protests.

“The President’s address regrettably appeared disconnected from the harsh realities faced by the people and failed to address critical issues that initially triggered the protest,” Obi stated in a Monday post on X.

He went on to suggest that the speech either indicated a lack of awareness among Tinubu’s advisers regarding the public’s suffering or was a deliberate attempt to ignore these issues.

“While the President’s speech focused on the past, the people are concerned with the present and the future. He should begin by addressing pressing issues such as the exorbitant cost of governance, measures to tackle corruption, the high cost of living, and directing resources effectively towards critical areas like health, education, and poverty alleviation,” Obi elaborated.

Obi emphasized the need for President Tinubu to declare a comprehensive battle against insecurity, economic challenges, poverty, unemployment, and the power sector crisis. He also stressed the importance of including the populace in the government’s economic plans through regular updates.
