PDP Crisis Deepens: Court Upholds Suspensions, Wike Calls for Peace as Another Senator Defects to Accord

Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, is facing renewed internal turmoil after a Court of Appeal ruling intensified leadership disputes and triggered fresh political realignments.

Following the judgment delivered by a panel led by Mohammed Ambi-Usi Danjuma, the party announced plans to challenge the decision at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. PDP spokesman Ini Ememobong said the party’s legal team had been instructed to appeal the ruling to prevent hardship for members and settle the dispute once and for all.

The appellate court upheld the suspension of several party officials, including Samuel Anyanwu and Umar Bature, while also nullifying the party’s controversial 2025 convention in Ibadan.

Reacting to the ruling, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, urged aggrieved factions to abandon legal battles and focus on reconciliation, warning that prolonged litigation could weaken the PDP ahead of future elections.

Meanwhile, the crisis took another twist as Senator Lere Kamorudeen Oyewumi defected from the PDP to the Accord Party, citing internal disagreements. His exit further reduces the party’s influence in Osun State following a wave of defections by other lawmakers.

Analysts say the unfolding developments highlight the PDP’s struggle to maintain unity as it attempts to reposition itself as a strong opposition force in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
