Ogun State’s Bold Plan to Combat Flooding: New Tributaries and Outlets for Ogun River
Ogun State is taking decisive action against the perennial flooding crisis affecting its wetland border communities, with a plan to create new tributaries and outlets for the Ogun River. This ambitious project, set to begin next month, aims to reduce flood impact and make areas like Isheri, Kara, Wawa, and Arepo more liveable and resilient.
The announcement was made by Dr. Ola Oresanya, Ogun State’s Commissioner for Environment, during a consultative meeting with residents at Riverview Estate in Isheri. This move signals the government’s commitment to long-term flood control solutions and community engagement.
Phased Approach to Flood Relief
The project will be executed in phases and may impact some buildings and residents in the affected areas, which is why the consultative process is crucial. The state government’s proactive approach reflects its effort to minimize disruptions while prioritizing the safety and well-being of the communities.
Dr. Oresanya highlighted the success of past interventions, noting that the dredging of the Oparo River has already reduced flood retention time from five to six weeks to just three weeks. Plans are underway to extend the dredging to the Majidun area in Ikorodu, creating a smoother water flow toward the lagoon.
“We are hoping to complete the dredging of that river to Majidun in Ikorodu as well as other interventions,” said Oresanya.

Community Cooperation is Key
As the project’s kickoff approaches, Dr. Oresanya urged residents to cooperate with the state government, ensuring a smooth and efficient implementation of the dredging exercise and the creation of new tributaries.
Mr. Olanrewaju Falade, Chairman of the Ogun-Lagos River Basin Communities, expressed the community’s renewed optimism following the meeting. He commended the state government for its consistent efforts through the Ministry of Environment, emphasizing their determination to resolve flooding issues.
“We are hopeful and looking forward to the various interventions that will make our communities liveable,” said Falade.
A Step Towards a Flood-Free Future
The Ogun State government’s proactive flood management strategy sets a model for collaborative governance and sustainable development. By creating additional outlets and tributaries, the project will enhance water flow, reduce flooding duration, and protect lives and property.
With the first phase launching soon, all eyes are on Ogun State to see how this transformational project unfolds — offering a blueprint for flood-prone regions across the nation.
