Ogun Govt Tells Gbenga Daniel: ‘No One Is Above the Law’ Amid Demolition Dispute
The Ogun State Government has firmly responded to allegations by former Governor and current Ogun East Senator, Gbenga Daniel, over a proposed demolition of his properties, insisting that no citizen is above the law.
Daniel had accused the state of plotting to demolish his Asoludero residence and the popular Conference Hotel in Sagamu under the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022 — legislation that came into effect after the buildings were allegedly constructed.
He argued that the move was politically motivated and a direct violation of due process, describing it as a targeted attack on his private investments.
However, Governor Dapo Abiodun’s spokesperson, Kayode Akinmade, dismissed these claims, saying the former governor was served the same legal notices as other property owners in the affected area.
“This is not about politics. Otunba Gbenga Daniel, like everyone else, was asked to present his planning permit and land title for verification within the stipulated time. Instead, he has resorted to cheap blackmail,” Akinmade said.
Urban Renewal Drive Sparks Controversy
The dispute comes as part of Governor Abiodun’s broader urban renewal initiative, which aims to redevelop towns and cities across Ogun State. The plan involves a comprehensive audit of existing buildings in major Government Reserved Areas (GRAs), starting with Ibara GRA in Abeokuta and expanding to Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode.
According to the government, the process includes verifying the legal status of all developments — from residential houses to schools, hospitals, and commercial complexes.
“Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s property in Sagamu GRA is just one of many served notices under the Town Planning Law and Regulation of Ogun State. The same process is being applied to numerous other structures,” Akinmade explained.
The government maintains that the exercise is strictly about compliance and city planning, not personal vendettas.
With the standoff escalating, all eyes are now on whether Daniel will comply with the directives or continue his legal and public resistance.
