Nigeria’s Fencing Future Shines Bright Despite Tough Outing at 2025 World Juniors in China

Although medals were out of reach, Team Nigeria’s participation at the 2025 World Junior Fencing Championships in Wuxi, China has been hailed as a strategic win by the Nigeria Fencing Federation (NFF)—a move focused on experience, exposure, and future growth.

Led by Nigeria’s top-ranked fencer, Inkosi Brou, the six-athlete team included a mix of locally and internationally based talent: Wisdom Okanlawon, Peluola Akinbamiro, and the Idongesit siblings—Mahadi, Mahathir, and Sara. While the team did not progress far in the tournament, the Federation views the outing as a launchpad for long-term development.

Brou delivered the team’s most notable individual performance by defeating Bulgaria’s Nikola Gospodinov 15-12 before narrowly losing to Hungary’s Sultan Stanbek 15-13. His showing proved that Nigerian fencers are capable of holding their own against some of the sport’s elite.

However, it was 17-year-old Wisdom Okanlawon, a homegrown talent, who captured hearts in the team event. Despite a first-round loss to New Zealand, Okanlawon’s agility and composure caught the eye of British Fencing President Pat Aiyenuro, who described him as “a future star” of the sport.

President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, praised the athletes not just for their performance, but also for the professionalism and spirit they displayed throughout the tournament.

“Our athletes showed the world that Nigerian fencing is on the rise,” Samuel said. “They were no pushovers and displayed admirable maturity on the piste. This championship has helped build their confidence and shown them what it takes to compete at the highest level. It’s a stepping stone, and the timing couldn’t be better as we prepare for the African Championships in June.”

According to Samuel, Nigeria’s presence in Wuxi was more than symbolic. It was an investment in the nation’s sporting future, allowing young athletes to learn, adapt, and improve by facing top-tier global competition.

As the fencing community in Nigeria continues to grow, this championship marks an important chapter in the country’s journey toward establishing a global presence in the sport.
