Nigeria Faces Nationwide Blackout After Another Grid Collapse
Nigeria has plunged into darkness following the third collapse of the national power grid this week, causing widespread blackouts across the country.

Grid Collapse Details
The latest collapse occurred early Saturday morning, with reports from across several states confirming total power outages. Data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org) showed that the grid recorded zero megawatts (MW) output as of 8:16 AM, rendering all 22 generation companies (GenCos) inactive.
This is the third grid failure in one week and the eighth disruption recorded in 2024. Despite the frequent outages, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has not issued an official statement on the cause of the latest collapse.
Recurring Issues with the National Grid
The country’s first major blackout of 2024 happened on February 4 when the grid crashed at 11:51 AM. At that time, power generation dropped from 2,407 MW to just 31 MW by noon and reached zero by 1 PM.
As of now, Benin Disco is generating 70 MW, followed by Ibadan Disco at 60 MW, while many other Discos report zero output.
Uncertainty and Public Concerns
The silence from TCN about the current grid failure leaves many Nigerians frustrated and worried about the reliability of the national grid. The frequent power outages continue to disrupt daily activities and raise concerns about the stability of the energy sector.
