Nigeria Absent as African Youths Converge in Botswana for ITTF Championships
Nigeria is notably missing from the 2024 ITTF Africa Youth Championships in Gaborone, Botswana. Despite being a leading team in Africa, Nigeria is not participating due to the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) failing to secure support from the Federal Ministry of Sports Development. This follows their absence from the 2023 ITTF World Youth Championships despite qualifying.

In the 2023 edition in Morocco, Nigeria participated with the help of Friends of Table Tennis who funded their trip. However, they are not present in Botswana where the event is being held at Botho University Hall from July 15.
Botswana, hosting a continental table tennis event for the first time, sees this as an opportunity to improve the sport locally and increase brand visibility. The President of the Botswana Table Tennis Association, Motswagole Kudzanani, highlighted the benefits of hosting such a prestigious tournament.

The 2024 championships have a higher number of participating nations than the previous year, including Botswana, Congo DRC, Ghana, Egypt, and others. This event also serves as the African qualifiers for the 2024 ITTF World Youth Championships in Helsingborg, Sweden, in November.
