Maduka Okoye Under Investigation for Alleged Betting Scandal

Boom RadioNG | January 17, 2025

Nigerian goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, who plays for Udinese and the Super Eagles, is facing scrutiny in Italy over allegations of involvement in a betting scandal. According to reports, the Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into claims that Okoye bet on receiving a yellow card during a match against Lazio on March 11, 2024.

The incident in question occurred during the 64th minute when Okoye was booked for time-wasting during a goal kick. Investigators suspect this action may have been part of a premeditated scheme to profit from a bet placed on that specific outcome.

The suspicious activity was flagged by Sisal, a prominent Italian betting company, using an algorithm designed to detect unusual betting patterns. Preliminary investigations suggest that a verbal agreement may have been made at Biffi pizzeria, a popular restaurant frequented by Udinese players and staff, and later formalized at a Sisal betting point in the city, just days before the match.

In addition to Okoye, the restaurant owner, Diego Giordano, has also been implicated in the case. Giordano, 40, is known for his connections with Udinese players and staff.

Despite having a successful season with Udinese since joining on a four-year deal, Okoye is currently sidelined with a wrist injury. The investigation continues to unravel the details of this alleged scandal.
