Sanwo-Olu Commissions New Lagos Commercial Court to Strengthen Legal Infrastructure and Revenue Enforcement

In a strategic move to enhance the efficiency of justice delivery and strengthen its fiscal enforcement mechanisms, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially commissioned the Lagos State Commercial Court, a modern legal facility located in Tapa, Lagos Island.

The newly constructed six-floor judicial complex boasts 10 fully furnished courtrooms, a dedicated library on each floor, conference rooms, and a range of support facilities designed to improve court operations and ease of doing business in the state.

A New Era for Commercial Justice in Lagos

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the facility as a “game-changer for legal and economic reform”, reinforcing the state’s commitment to building a transparent, fair, and swift judicial process that supports its economic vision.

“This Commercial Court will not only resolve business disputes efficiently but also act as a revenue court to ensure legal compliance with tax and fiscal regulations,” Sanwo-Olu noted.

Doubling as the Lagos Revenue Court

More than just a commercial dispute resolution center, the court also serves as the Lagos State Revenue Court. It has the mandate to handle cases related to:

  • Tax recovery and prosecution of defaulters

  • Recovery of levies, Land Use Charges, and rates

  • Enforcement of government-imposed fines and other statutory payments

This development marks a significant institutional milestone, as the judicial arm of Lagos State now directly supports the state’s revenue generation efforts through swift and lawful enforcement mechanisms.

Boosting Business Confidence and Legal Efficiency

By offering a reliable and efficient platform for resolving commercial conflicts, the court aims to:

  • Improve investor confidence in Lagos’ legal framework

  • Accelerate dispute resolution timelines

  • Reduce bottlenecks in enforcing financial obligations

  • Foster a more accountable civic and business environment

Legal practitioners, business owners, and public administrators alike have lauded the initiative as a critical step in bridging the gap between governance, revenue mobilization, and the rule of law.

As Lagos continues to position itself as the economic capital of West Africa, this world-class Commercial Court facility is expected to drive legal innovation, strengthen institutional trust, and contribute to the sustainable development of the state’s economy.
