The Lagos State government is taking a multi-pronged approach to ensure food security for its residents. Under the leadership of Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, the state is fostering a robust agricultural sector and improving access to fresh, affordable food.

Thousands of farmers in Ojo cultivate a variety of vegetables like shòkò, ewedu, water leaf, green onions, and even rice, contributing significantly to the state’s food supply. Over 50 truckloads of these vegetables leave Ojo daily, destined for markets like Oyingbo and Ile epo. This dedication translates to a production of over 18,000 metric tons (Mt) per month, with some farmers even venturing into exports.

Beyond Ojo, the state government supports agricultural activities in Badagry. Here, vast fields of tomatoes are cultivated in the Olorunda LCDA, creating a community focused on feeding Lagosians. Farmers of all generations collaborate, resulting in a win-win situation: farmers earn good returns, and consumers benefit from affordable, healthy food.

Challenges and Solutions

While production thrives, disorganized markets can hinder the benefits reaching consumers. To address this, the Lagos State government is actively involved in improving access to organized markets. Initiatives like the Freshfoodhub, a state-run fresh food market initiative, aim to bring fresh produce to Lagosians in a clean environment and at affordable prices.
