Kunle Afolayan Opens Up on Heated Call From Funke Akindele Over Nollywood Promo Debate
Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has revealed that actress-producer Funke Akindele placed an angry phone call to him after his comments on Nollywood film promotion were misinterpreted as a jab at dance-heavy marketing strategies. Speaking on ARISE News, Afolayan said he was shocked by the reaction, insisting his remarks were personal preferences, not criticism.
He clarified that he never condemned Akindele’s highly successful promo style, instead praising her growth and advising young filmmakers to study her business model. Afolayan also apologized if she felt offended, while condemning online harassment linked to the backlash.

Beyond the controversy, he confirmed Aníkúlápó Season Two debuted as Netflix’s most-watched title in Nigeria within 24 hours, dismissing rumours that the streaming giant had exited the country.
