Kanye West Issues Public Apology in Wall Street Journal, Cites Bipolar Disorder and Seeks Redemption

Kanye West, now legally known as Ye, has taken out a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal to publicly apologise for his past antisemitic actions, declaring, “I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people.”

In the open letter titled “To Those I’ve Hurt,” Ye linked his controversial behaviour — including offensive remarks and the sale of swastika-branded merchandise — to bipolar type-1 disorder, which he says was triggered by an undiagnosed frontal-lobe brain injury from his 2002 car accident. According to Ye, the condition led to severe manic episodes, impaired judgment, and a loss of touch with reality.

He expressed regret over actions that harmed the Jewish and Black communities, acknowledged the pain caused to his family and loved ones, and stressed that mental illness does not excuse hate. Ye said he is now undergoing treatment, therapy, and lifestyle changes, and is committed to accountability and meaningful change.

The apology marks a rare moment of reflection from the artist, as he asks for patience rather than sympathy while attempting to rebuild trust and focus on positive creative work.
