Kano Mandates Premarital Health Screening to Promote Healthy Families
Kano State has taken a significant step towards promoting healthier families with the signing of the Kano State Premarital Health Screening Law. This law, championed by Governor Abba Yusuf, requires all couples seeking to marry to undergo mandatory health screenings.
Reduced Risk of Genetic Disorders and Infections
The screenings will focus on genotype compatibility to minimize the risk of sickle cell disease in offspring, along with testing for HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B & C. This initiative aims to reduce the prevalence of these preventable illnesses in future generations.
Effective Date and Compliance
The law comes into effect on May 13, 2024. All couples intending to marry in Kano State must present certificates from government-approved health facilities proving they have undergone the mandated tests. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to N500,000 or a minimum five-year jail sentence, or both.
