Justice for Teejay: Lagos Police Arraign Driver Over Death of Bumpa Co-Founder
Public Outcry Grows as Petition Calls for Manslaughter Charges
The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned Abiola Odutayo in connection with the tragic death of Adetunji Opayele, popularly known as Teejay, a co-founder of the Nigerian startup Bumpa.
Odutayo was formally charged with reckless and careless driving on a public highway, which led to Opayele’s death on March 4, 2025. The case, which has sparked public outrage, has seen over 35,000 Nigerians sign a petition demanding stiffer charges, including manslaughter.
Court Proceedings and Bail Grant
According to Benjamin Hundeyin, the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, Odutayo was arraigned at Court 1, Tinubu, on March 12, 2025, after being discharged from the hospital.
“Following a thorough investigation, Abiola Odutayo was arraigned for driving on a public highway in a reckless and careless manner, without due care and attention to other road users, which resulted in the death of Adetunji Opayele.”
The court granted Odutayo bail, and the case has been adjourned until April 16, 2025.

What Happened to Teejay?
The incident occurred along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Lagos, where Opayele was involved in a collision. Reports indicate that Odutayo allegedly refused to assist the critically injured Teejay, citing concerns about staining her car.
Bystanders struggled to find medical help, as multiple hospitals allegedly refused treatment, delaying his care. Tragically, Teejay was pronounced dead hours later, after all efforts to save him failed.

The circumstances surrounding Opayele’s death have sparked national outrage, with many Nigerians demanding a harsher legal response. Critics argue that reckless driving charges are insufficient, pushing for manslaughter charges instead.
