Joseph Boakai Officially Elected President of Liberia; Weah’s Gracious Concession Praised by Many

Veteran Liberian politician Joseph Boakai was officially declared the winner of the presidential election, succeeding outgoing George Weah. Boakai, 78, secured victory with 50.64% of the votes against Weah’s 49.36%. Weah’s graceful acceptance of defeat garnered praise globally for promoting a non-violent transfer of power.

Despite Boakai’s narrow lead of 20,567 votes, he remained notably silent, while Weah acknowledged his opponent’s victory on Friday evening. The electoral process faced challenges with appeals in Nimba county, and the commission has 30 days to investigate.

The AU congratulated Boakai, lauding Weah’s “sense of statehood.” International leaders, including Joe Biden, acknowledged the peaceful transition and called for continued maturity and dialogue to consolidate democracy.
