INEC Declares Douye Diri Winner of Bayelsa Governorship Election, 2023
After the conclusion of the off-cycle election in Bayelsa state, Governor Douye Diri has won himself a second term in office as the leader of the coastal state.
This was announced by the Returning Officer for the election Prof Faruq Kuta saying “That Diri Douye of the PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” after numerous breaks and adjournments of the collation exercise.

The current governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate fought off 17 other candidates including his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart, a former governor and minister, Timipre Sylva in a fiercely contested exercise in the state.
Governor Diri got a total of 175,196 votes while APC’s Sylva polled 110,108 votes which means the governor defeated his closest rival by 65,088 votes. The Labour Party (LP) which came a distant third scored a total of 905 votes.
