In a significant step towards closer regional integration, the foreign ministers of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have recommended the establishment of a confederation as part of a long-term goal to unite the West African neighbors within a federation.
The decision was reached during a two-day meeting of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) foreign ministers in Bamako, Mali, on December 1st. The ministers emphasized the importance of diplomacy, defense, and development in consolidating political and economic integration.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Move Closer to Forming a Federation
The recommendation for a confederation follows a series of meetings and agreements between the three countries, including the signing of a mutual defense pact in September 2023. The AES was established in June 2023 to promote cooperation and development in the Sahel region.
The next step in the process will be for the heads of state of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to consider the foreign ministers’ recommendation. If they approve the recommendation, the three countries will begin the process of forming a confederation.
