the House of Representatives has voted to reduce their salaries by 50% for the next six months. This resolution, passed during Thursday’s plenary session, aims to alleviate the economic hardship faced by many Nigerians.

Lawmakers Respond to Public Hardship

The motion, titled ‘An Appeal to the Proponents of Proposed Nationwide Protest to Maintain Peace, Eschew Violence, and Open the Windows for Meaningful Engagements with Government at all Levels in Order to Address their Issues,’ was introduced by Ibrahim Isiaka from Ogun State. It calls on those planning nationwide protests to opt for patience and dialogue with the government instead.

Commitment to National Sacrifice

The decision reflects the lawmakers’ commitment to national sacrifice, emphasizing that the challenges facing Nigeria are not unique and that substantial change takes time. They urged citizens to recognize the reforms and progress achieved by the government.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu voiced his support for the motion, acknowledging that President Bola Tinubu’s administration, in its first year, cannot be expected to resolve all the nation’s problems. Kalu disclosed that House members earn N600,000 monthly, highlighting their willingness to sacrifice half of this income for the benefit of the populace.
