Honey Badgers Make History with NWFL Premiership Debut, Ibom Angels Return in Style
In a thrilling day of women’s football at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar, the Honey Badgers and Ibom Angels secured their spots in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership. Both teams emerged victorious in their playoff matches, marking a significant step forward in their football journeys.

The Benue State-based Honey Badgers made history with their first-ever promotion to the NWFL Premiership after defeating Pelican Stars 1-0. A second-half strike from Hellen Daniel in the 67th minute proved to be the game’s only goal, sealing a monumental win for the team. Despite early pressure and a near-miss, the Badgers held their ground with goalkeeper Stella Okereke making key saves to keep their hopes alive. The victory is a landmark achievement for the club as they prepare for their debut in Nigeria’s top-flight women’s league.

In the earlier match, Ibom Angels confirmed their return to the NWFL Premiership just a season after being relegated. The Uyo-based side triumphed over Osun Babes 2-0, with goals from Abasiofon Uwah in the 10th minute and Ijeoma Onweagba’s long-range effort in the 61st minute. Despite a late penalty opportunity for Osun Babes, which Kafayat Bashiru missed, Ibom Angels dominated the match and sealed their promotion with confidence.
Both teams will now compete in the 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership, with the Honey Badgers making their debut and Ibom Angels looking to make their mark once again.

Meanwhile, Chosen Generation Angels and Heroes Queens retained their NWFL Championship status, while Kaduna Queens and DreamStar FC Ladies were relegated to the third tier after losing their respective playoff matches.
NWFL Chairman Nkechi Obi commended the efforts of Honey Badgers and Ibom Angels, praising their determination and hard work, while expressing her appreciation to the Cross River State government for hosting the successful championship.
