The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has proposed a new national minimum wage of ₦100,000 , acknowledging the need to improve workers’ welfare amid rising living costs.

The announcement:

NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq made the position known on Friday, stating that governors are actively engaging with the federal government and labour unions to reach a sustainable agreement.

Where things stand:

  • Current statutory minimum wage: ₦70,000 (National Minimum Wage Act, approved by President Tinubu)

  • Some states (Lagos, Rivers, Imo) already pay above the standard

  • New proposal: ₦100,000

The bigger picture:

The NGF also endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms. The wage proposal is expected to shape ongoing negotiations on wages, inflation, and broader economic measures.

The bottom line:

Governors want workers to earn more. Now labour unions will test if that commitment holds at the bargaining table.
