Gateway International Airport Set for Landmark Commercial Licence – A First in Nigeria’s Aviation History
Ogun State is on the brink of making aviation history as the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport prepares to receive an unprecedented commercial operations licence this week—a certification the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) says no other airport in the country has ever achieved.

Governor Dapo Abiodun revealed that NCAA officials had completed all inspections and confirmed the airport’s compliance with advanced operational standards.
“The approval your airport will get, no other airports in Nigeria have that approval,” the governor quoted NCAA officials as saying.

A Strategic Alternative to Lagos’s Overloaded Airspace
Located in Iperu-Remo, just 80km from Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), the Gateway Airport is set to serve as a strategic alternative for both passenger and cargo flights. The facility will be able to receive flights diverted from Lagos—many of which currently reroute to Ghana due to congestion or adverse weather.
Initial passenger routes will connect Ogun to Abuja and Port Harcourt, while international operations are already in motion. A British cargo operator has committed to two weekly flights from London, focusing on boosting Nigeria’s agricultural exports to the global market.
World-Class Infrastructure Meets Ambitious Vision
With a 4-kilometre runway—one of the longest in West Africa—the airport is capable of handling large aircraft, including Boeing 747s and Airbus A330s. The site features Category I approach lighting, Precision Approach Path Indicators, and other advanced navigation aids to ensure safe, all-weather operations.
Construction of the airport began under Governor Abiodun’s administration, with runway checks and flight validation completed by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency in April 2025. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during his July visit, described the facility as a “working reality.” Charter flights have been operating since late last year.

Driving Ogun’s Economic Future
The Gateway International Airport forms part of a wider development strategy that includes nearby free trade zones, offering customs and tax incentives to attract global investors. Analysts predict the airport will expand Nigeria’s agro-export capacity, create thousands of jobs, and significantly boost Ogun’s economic standing while easing pressure on Lagos’s infrastructure.
“This puts our state on the global map,” Abiodun declared.
The official NCAA licence announcement is expected later this week, marking a new benchmark for airport excellence in Nigeria.
