Federal Government Invalidates Fake Degrees from Benin and Togo; Employees to Face Immediate Termination

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared all degree certificates issued by certain universities in the Republics of Benin and Togo between 2017 and 2023 as invalid. Employees in both public and private sectors holding these counterfeit degrees will face immediate termination.

Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, announced this crackdown during a press briefing in Abuja, marking his first year in office. The decision follows a comprehensive review by a committee set up by the Ministry of Education, which was later endorsed by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

Mamman explained that the review identified over 21,000 fake certificates from Benin Republic and more than 1,100 from Togo. These certificates were issued by unrecognized institutions that are not accredited to offer degree programs in their respective countries.

To enforce this decision, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has been instructed to circulate a directive to all employers to identify and remove employees holding these invalid certificates. Additionally, the Head of Service has been tasked with ensuring that public sector employees with these fraudulent degrees are also terminated.

Mamman emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s education system and ensuring that legitimate graduates are not undermined by those who obtained fake qualifications.
