El-Rufai Family Accuses ICPC of “Smear Campaign” Over Abuja Raid
The family of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of orchestrating a “malicious smear campaign” following a controversial search of his Abuja residence.

In a statement issued by his son, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, a member of the House of Representatives, the family denied claims that the former governor refused to cooperate with investigators. They argued that the right to remain silent is constitutionally protected and does not amount to obstruction.
The ICPC had reportedly searched El-Rufai’s home over allegations involving surveillance equipment. However, the family insists that only “old mobile phones, flash drives, and laptops” were recovered, dismissing claims of espionage devices as false.
‘Defective Warrant’ Allegation
El-Rufai’s legal team is challenging the validity of the search warrant, alleging it was fraudulently obtained and jurisdictionally flawed. The former governor has now filed a ₦1 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit, naming the ICPC, the Chief Magistrate of the FCT, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Attorney-General of the Federation as respondents.
