Egypt’s Rising Stars Return to Lagos

Building on their success at the 2022 Cadet and Junior African Fencing Championship, Egypt’s squad returns to Lagos with a mission. Led by world cadet silver medalist Eslam Osama, ranked No. 11 in the junior category, the eight-man team is determined to secure valuable ranking points. Joining Osama are his equally talented compatriots, Youssef Shamel (ranked No. 13) and Mahmoud Elsayed (ranked No. 14).

This International Fencing Federation (FIE)-certified tournament is a critical step for the Egyptian team as they prepare for the 2025 international fencing season.

An International Showcase in Lagos

The two-day tournament at Charterhouse, Lagos, will feature teams from diverse nations, including Hong Kong, Greece, Benin Republic, Togo, Senegal, Ghana, Angola, Saudi Arabia, and Kenya. As the sole Sub-Saharan African country hosting the World Cup, Nigeria has solidified its position as a key player in global fencing.

Hong Kong’s teenage phenom Kenton Jia Hsu, ranked No. 18, will lead his country’s charge in Lagos, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.

Nigeria’s Home Advantage

The Nigerian team, led by local hero Wisdom Okanlawon, is prepared to defend their turf. A former African cadet champion, Okanlawon is optimistic about their chances:

“It won’t be easy, but we will do our best to make our country proud against our visitors. We hope to mount the podium in all events as a team.”
