EFCC Recovers ₦1.2 Billion from Sujimoto, Hands Funds to Enugu Government Over Abandoned Smart Schools Project
In a major boost to Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has returned ₦1.234 billion to the Enugu State Government, following investigations into an alleged contract breach involving Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited.
The funds were officially handed over on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, reaffirming the EFCC’s mandate to trace, recover, and restitute public funds linked to economic and financial crimes. The recovered sum relates to a failed agreement for the construction of 22 smart schools across Enugu State.

How the Case Unfolded
The EFCC’s action followed a petition dated February 11, 2025, which accused Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited of fraudulent conduct and non-performance after receiving a substantial advance payment from the Enugu State Government.
According to the petition, the state paid ₦2.289 billion as an advance fee for the smart schools project. However, documents revealed that the contract completion deadline of January 2, 2025 elapsed without meaningful progress, raising red flags over the handling of the funds.
The petitioner further identified Dr. Olasijibomi Ogundele, Group Managing Director of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited, as jointly liable, alleging that the project funds were diverted to uses unconnected to the contract, constituting an irremediable breach.
EFCC Investigation and Recovery
Acting swiftly, operatives of the Special Task Fraud Section, attached to the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the EFCC, launched a detailed investigation. Their efforts led to the recovery of ₦1,234,350,000, which was subsequently returned to the Enugu State Government.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Commander of the EFCC and Zonal Director, Enugu Directorate, CE Daniel Isei, who represented the EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, emphasized the Commission’s zero-tolerance stance on financial crimes:
“Where there are instances of economic and financial crimes against government or individuals, the EFCC will ensure that every act contrary to law is addressed and restitution made where possible.”
Strong Warning to Contractors
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede issued a stern warning to contractors handling public funds, stressing strict compliance with the Public Procurement Act, accountability, and transparency. He reaffirmed that the Commission would trace and recover every kobo of public money not properly accounted for and pursue prosecution wherever criminality is established.
He further noted that adherence to due process and professionalism remains the strongest deterrent against corruption in public contracting.
