EFCC Nabs Fraudster for Scamming 139 Australians of $8 Million

Boom RadioNG | December 14, 2024

In a decisive operation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Osang Otukpa, an alleged online fraudster accused of duping 139 Australians out of $8 million.

Last Friday, operatives of the EFCC apprehended Otukpa at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, upon his arrival from the United States. According to a statement released by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, Otukpa had been under surveillance prior to his arrest.

A Web of Deception

Otukpa, who operated under various aliases—Ford Thompson, Oscar Donald Tyler, Michael Haye, Jose Vitto, and Kristin Davidson—reportedly enticed his victims through a fake cryptocurrency investment platform called Liquid Asset Group. He convinced them to invest large sums of money, promising high returns that never materialized.

The EFCC disclosed that the proceeds from these fraudulent activities were funneled through a global cryptocurrency exchange platform into Otukpa’s bank accounts. However, the specific exchange platform used was not named in the statement.

EFCC’s Official Statement

In the statement, the EFCC detailed the scope of Otukpa’s alleged crimes, emphasizing the international nature of the scam. “Otukpa, who uses multiple aliases, lured victims on social media to invest in his bogus cryptocurrency platform, Liquid Asset Group (LAG),” the EFCC stated.

Ongoing Investigations

The EFCC confirmed that Otukpa will face charges upon the completion of the ongoing investigations. This arrest highlights the agency’s commitment to tackling cybercrime and protecting victims from such fraudulent schemes.

Financial Transparency Lacking

Otukpa’s case underscores the importance of financial transparency in preventing fraud. Despite repeated requests, the victims were reportedly denied access to clear financial records of their investments. This lack of transparency facilitated Otukpa’s scheme, leaving his victims in substantial debt.

The arrest of Otukpa is a significant victory for the EFCC, showcasing their ability to coordinate with international agencies to combat online fraud. This case also serves as a reminder of the growing threat of cybercrime and the need for increased vigilance among investors.
