Edo Government Denies Ban on Davido, Reaffirms Support for Afrobeats Star
The Edo State Government has dismissed claims circulating online that afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has been banned from performing in the state.
The controversy began after a viral video featuring Apostle Kassy Chukwu, who identified himself as a Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media to Governor Monday Okpebholo, declared that Davido was no longer welcome in Edo. In the video, Chukwu alleged that Edo youths were angry and threatened to “deal with him” if he returned to perform.

Reacting swiftly, Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, issued a statement on Friday evening debunking the claims. Afegbua described the video as “fraudulent” and insisted that Davido remains loved and respected in Edo.
“Our enemies are at it again; we did not ban Davido from entering Edo State. The proclaimer of that ban is an impostor and a fraud. Edo State is home to all, regardless of belief, political persuasion, or affiliation,” Afegbua said.
He added that the government would be willing to collaborate with Davido should he wish to perform in Edo in the future, highlighting his roots in the state through his late mother. “Davido is one of our illustrious sons… we are pleased to associate with him,” Afegbua noted.
Political Undertones
The alleged dispute stems from the August 15 Osun governorship election, where Governor Okpebholo criticised Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke, Davido’s uncle. In response, Davido shared what appeared to be Okpebholo’s WAEC result on Instagram, later defending his action in an interview and refusing to apologise.
Despite the political tension, Afegbua stressed that the matter was purely campaign-related and not personal. He praised Davido as a “global ambassador” for Nigeria, commending his achievements in the music industry and expressing optimism about his future, including the possibility of winning a Grammy.
The Edo Government’s clarification aims to put rumours to rest and reassure fans that Davido remains welcome in the state. Beyond the politics, the statement underscores Edo’s commitment to celebrating its cultural icons and maintaining unity. As Nigeria’s entertainment industry continues to thrive globally, the government’s support for Davido reflects the broader recognition of music as a bridge across divides.
