Charlie Kirk Assassination: FBI Hunts Suspect as Trump Calls Slain Activist a “Giant of His Generation”
The United States was rocked Wednesday after right-wing youth leader Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot dead while addressing a packed crowd at Utah Valley University. Authorities have described the killing as a “targeted attack”, intensifying concerns about political violence in a country already strained by deep divisions.
The FBI released images of a manhunt suspect Thursday, showing a figure wearing a black baseball cap, dark sunglasses, and a shirt emblazoned with an American flag. The gunman — believed to be of university age — escaped into nearby woodland, leaving behind a high-powered bolt-action rifle later recovered by investigators. A $100,000 reward has been announced for information leading to his capture.
“We’re doing everything we can to find him,” said FBI Special Agent Robert Bohls. “We’re not sure how far he has gone yet, but we will do our best.”
Trump Leads Tributes, Calls It a ‘Dark Moment’
Former President Donald Trump, who credited Kirk with helping secure his return to the White House, was the first to confirm his ally’s death. In a somber address on social media, Trump condemned the attack as politically motivated and blamed “radical left rhetoric” for fueling violence.
“Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions,” Trump said, pledging to posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
Shockwaves Across Campuses and Politics
Witnesses described scenes of panic as Kirk collapsed after being shot in the neck. Students said the incident deepened fears about expressing political opinions on campus.
“It makes me feel like I should be very careful about sharing my ideas,” said Samuel Kimball, a software engineering student.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the killing as a “political assassination.” Supporters of Kirk, who co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012, hailed him as a “martyr” for conservative ideals. Known for his sharp debating style and huge online following across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, Kirk became a powerful figure shaping conservative youth culture.
His assassination comes just months after Trump survived an attempted assassination in July 2024 and weeks after a Minnesota man killed a Democratic lawmaker and her husband, raising alarms about a dangerous new era of political violence in America.
Vice President JD Vance is expected to visit Kirk’s family in Utah, cutting short his plans to attend 9/11 memorial events in New York.
