CAF Awards Nigeria 3 Points, 3 Goals After Libya’s Forfeit in AFCON 2025 Qualifier

Boom RadioNG | October 26, 2024

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board has granted Nigeria a 3-0 victory by forfeit after Libya failed to fulfill their obligations for the scheduled AFCON 2025 Qualifier on October 15th. This decision puts Nigeria in a commanding position to qualify for the tournament, with two matches left in the qualification series.

CAF’s Ruling and Penalties for Libya

CAF’s ruling, issued on Saturday by Disciplinary Board Chairman Ousmane Kane, cited multiple breaches of tournament regulations by the Libyan Football Federation, including:

  1. Violation of Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations.
  2. Breaches of Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
  3. Libya forfeits the match against Nigeria with a 3-0 defeat by default.
  4. The Libyan Football Federation is fined $50,000, payable within 60 days of the ruling.

With this decision, Libya has been eliminated from the 2025 AFCON qualification race, sitting at the bottom of the group with only one point.

Nigeria’s Path to Qualification

Following the award of three points, Nigeria now has 10 points from four matches, giving the Super Eagles a four-point lead over second-placed Benin Republic and a five-point advantage over Rwanda.

Nigeria’s qualification hopes look promising ahead of their Matchday 5 fixture against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic on November 14th in Abidjan. A victory or draw will guarantee Nigeria a spot in the AFCON finals set to take place in Morocco from December 2025 to January 2026.
