ASFU Pays Tribute to Late Prince Peter Rufai: Nigeria’s Goalkeeping Icon and Youth Development Champion
The African Students Football Union (ASFU) and the broader Nigerian football community are in mourning following the passing of Prince Peter Rufai, fondly known as Dodomayana. The former Super Eagles goalkeeper died on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 6:00 AM after a brief illness. He was 61 years old.

Rufai wasn’t just a football icon—he was a bridge between the past, present, and future of African football. As a celebrated Ambassador of ASFU, Rufai passionately embodied the “town and gown” philosophy—an ideology rooted in harmonizing academic excellence with community impact through sports.

A Life of Glory and Service
Peter Rufai’s legacy is cemented in Nigeria’s golden era of football, having captained the Super Eagles during the country’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations victory and historic FIFA World Cup debut the same year. With over 65 caps for the national team, Rufai was admired not only for his shot-stopping prowess but also for his leadership and dignity both on and off the pitch.
Off the field, Rufai dedicated his life to mentoring the next generation of student-athletes, advocating for holistic development—ensuring they thrived academically, socially, and athletically.
